Sadly I learned that Jimmy Castor died today, he was only 64 ! His epic tune “It´s just begun” influenced me as a DJ and Rap fanatic a lot. I can remember vividly that I was looking for this particular record so hard and finally found the album with the same title. Man, it was a perfect day….and the Saxophone hook of this song is damn Hip Hop.

“Its Just Begun” is still a sureshot for every blockparty and the tune still catches me. So check out his music and watch this kind of tribute video as well.

This song is from 1993 when Rap was GOLDEN ! You know what I mean….the golden era of hip hop and rap music. Biz Markie is without a doubt one of the most funniest MC´s out there and did several incredible records. He was also the first rapper that got sued over an uncleared sample ! His song Alone Again (Naturally) was using a sample from Gilbert O´Sullivan original song with the same name. Biz Markies label Cold Chillin´Records was singned to Warner Music at that time (1991) and after this lawsuit all samples must be cleared with the original artist before being used. Biz responded in 1993 with the mischievously titled album All Samples Cleared!

First showers of snow this year. The cozy time begins and this song is a great winter tune, I think. Eventhough Teedra Moses never breaked in the States, she is a talented singer and skilled songwriter. This song here is from here debut album “Complex Simplicity” back from 2004 and features Raphael Saddiq. Good choice indeed. Teedra is from New Orleans and will see her 35th birthday later this month. And finally, after waiting for almost 6 years to get another deal, she is signed to Rick Ross´ label called Maybach Music. Her second album “Luxurious Undergrind” should be released next year…..

Actually this video was a promo viral thing for People Under The Stairs album Fun DMC back in 2008. It is featuring the most incredible bad ass funkster Mister Rick James. With his unique sound and the obscure dressing code Rick James influences a lot a musicians and rappers. And his love or better his heavy addiction to cocaine and women were legendary…. Rick James died back in 2004 in Burbank, California.

Check out this cool and so funny video by the B-Boy from Buffalo. Actually he was from Buffalo !

No not me….not yet ! But this band from Detroit is back in my mind. I just read a posting on Facebook by Dave Lee aka Joey Negro. On his label Z Records a fine compilation is released called “Under the Influence” by Red Greg aka Darren Griffiths. Check out his mixes and his unique style on waxdjs.com ! And there you can find the very rare tune “You´re A Melody” by Aged in Harmony. A killer of a tune !

You seem quite confident !!!! Long time…But I had some things to do, you know how it is. But today it´s the mid of the week and therefore we call it Wu-day ! The clan is the best, word up. Anyway, this is GAB GOTCHA, not the Clan, sorry homies! But check out the freaky video, it´s a real trip. Gabriel Velasquez hails from Medellin, Columbia and resides in Queens, New York City. His debut album”Timeless” was released back in twenty ten on the Wu Tang Clan´s own label called Wu Music Group ! Time for old school Electro from L.A. ! I bought this 12″ when it was released back in ´85 and me was trying to pop lock to it. Actually the band was a duo and called Dream Team but they joined forces with Lisa “Miss Rockberry” Love for this song, at least. In the mid 80ties Funk and Disco were almost gone and very cheesy production were all over the place. Back then Rap and Electro Freestyle turned my world around and it was a fine change to the game. Acts like JJ Fad, also on Dream Tam Records, and heroes like The Egyptian Lover were making big waves coming from L.A. Later on it was Miami Bass and Luke Skywalker and the famous 2 Live Crew. And of course New York got a vivid scene and people like Kurtis Mantronik and Louie Vega earned their first production credits on labels like Sleeping Bag Records by owner Arthur Russell. Not to forget Tommy Boy Records and their early approach with Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force and their über-hit “Planet Rock” produced by legendary Arthur Baker. So the mid 80ties weren´t so bad at all I just recognized….

Larry Levan

19 years and a day is it that Larry Levan has passed away. He was the legendary DJ at the legendary club Paradise Garage in New York City. He deeply influenced my whole life in the music industry and of course as a DJ. I´m still disappointed never had been to the Garage. The club closed down end of September 1987. Larry Levan and the Paradise Garage influenced a lot of DJ´s worldwide and Larry is often stated as the best DJ ever. Due to the fact Larry was such a very hot and popular DJ he also became a very sought for remixer of 12″ singles. His remixes are much like the style he had when spinning at “the Garage”. It’s almost like a dub type kind of mixes, often with long instrumental parts and building DJ-friendly intros. On top of this he puts lots of heavy basslines. For you guys who dont know about this important time for dance music and club culture, you should defenitley watch “Maestro”. This documentary was filmed in 2002 and features all key players and great interviews with former clubheads ! And it relveals that Larry Levan was deeply engaged with the Paradise Garage club. It was the heyday of quality dance music.

Ryuichi Sakamoto Portrait

Tonight Ryuichi Sakaomoto is in town and playing a concert. This will be my 3rd Sakamoto gig in 15 years I think. The former Yellow Magic Orchestra band member is one of the best pianists I know and his gig´s are always amazing and pure deepness. His fantastic timing and the musical pictures he is painting are always great to listen to. Sakamoto collaborated with several artists like David Sylvian and Morelenbaum. He is one of the best composere of our time. He composed several epic scores like the “The Last Emperor” in which he played also a tiny sequence and he got awarded with a Golden Globe and a Grammy award. Ryuichi Sakamoto´s song for the Yelow Magic Orchestra back from 1980 called “Riot In Lagos” is often credited as the beginning of Electro Music.

Anyway, check out his composition “Undercooled”. Here as an instrumental version. Actually it was a Japanese Rap song but without the lyrics it is deep monster!

Detroit Lions

I just learned that the Detroit Lions invited the band Nickelbag to play during the Tahnksgiving game ! But people from Detroit got style and calss and so they started a petition to say: No Nickelbag in our stadium! I really like that ! Motown got so many exciting artistis to offer and the city stands from Rock and Soul and for Techno as well. The petition says: The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime.”

Word up ! I think you should invite Moodymann to play a fine DJ Set for you guys!

Oh any btw, I got the original Eddy Murphy “Beverly Hills Cop” Detroit Lions jacket in my closet….
